Less than 18 months after the Roosters controversially sacked him, renowned sprint coach Roger Fabri looks likely to return to Bondi Junction.
Fairfax Media can reveal Roosters officials are in talks to bring Fabri back to the club as part of Trent Robinson’s coaching line-up. Fabri recently attended a special workshop conducted by the Olympic legend Michael Johnson at his performance centre in Dallas, Texas. He impressed to the point where he was offered a full-time position, but will instead return to the club that unceremoniously dumped him. The former sprint star was viewed by many as the scapegoat when Todd Carney went off the rails at the Roosters. There were reports that Fabri, a close friend and unofficial minder for the NSW playmaker, was the fall guy when Carney’s social life spiralled out of control.
The biggest impediment to his return is that former chief executive Steve Noyce recently lost his position as part of a clean out, which also included head coach Brian Smith and other staffers. Fabri could not be contacted for comment about his Roosters return. The news is sure to be welcomed by Roosters players. Former captain Braith Anasta was so impressed with Fabri’s methods he joined him as a business partner to set up the Speed Agility Academy.
Even after the club severed ties with Fabri, some of its biggest stars continued to train under him. More than half a dozen players – including Mitchell Pearce, Anthony Minichiello, Jake Friend, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, B. J. Leilua and Aidan Guerra – supplemented their club regime with Fabri’s sprint sessions at Centennial Park. Superstar recruit Sonny Bill Williams is also a client and it is believed a recommendation from the dual international helped seal Fabri’s return to the Roosters. Fabri’s other NRL clients include Jarryd Hayne, Willie Mason, Reni Maitua, Adam Blair and Michael Jennings.
