On the back of just two NRL games, Penrith have signed local junior Blake Austin on a massive contract in which he could earn $700,000 over two years.

The Panthers beat half a dozen rival clubs to the signature of Austin during the week in what could be the most lucrative NRL deal offered to a rookie. The Australian Schoolboys representative played in the centres during a recent trial against Parramatta but is seen as a potential long-term option at five-eighth.

He can also play in the back row and was selected on the interchange bench for last night’s opening-round match against Canterbury at Centrebet Stadium.
